The Last Of The Roses

The weather report says there is a possibility of snow flurries this coming week.  I clip the last of the roses and, once again, the season of living like a duchess, with flowers in every room of the house is over.

I may not have reached the level of Elton John's floral arrangements but I've had tulips spilling out of vases. ~

Peonies have brightened window sills ~

and apple blossoms in an old, transferware teapot have filled the library with a heavenly scent. ~

There have been lilacs, gladiolas, orange blossoms, paper whites and sunflowers.  The gardens have been generous and I have been surrounded by beauty.

The last roses are tinged with frost and far from perfect, ~

but they will stay on my desk until the last petal falls. ~

For a few more days, I'll hold winter at bay.

  2. It's very sad to me when winter is on our heels. I'll miss the pretty flowers from our gardens and the fragrances will have to be homemade! You had gorgeous flowers this year Maureen! xo wendy

  3. Your bouquets are beautiful. How the summer season has flown past so fast and we will no longer enjoy beautiful blooms from our own gardens. The last roses are so pretty on your desk. We haven't had a killing frost here yet so things are still blooming. I'm hanging on to them as long as I can. Enjoy your day. Blessings, Pamela

  6. Maureen,

You've had bouquets fit for a queen, never mind a duchess! They're all beautiful, and I am especially enchanted with the apple blossoms, their pretty white petals shine delicately among the freshness of their leafy greens. Their scent must have been hypnotic!

  11. The only thing more melancholy than an October rose is one that makes it to December

  12. I can't believe you may have snow soon. Your flowers are gorgeous and perfect for a Duchess (I always thought you might have Royal connections anyway) and I love your lamp Maureen.

  14. At least you get to enjoy the last hurrah before the cold weather. My roses were suffering in the summer heat and the last few weeks are loaded with blooms again. Here in Texas it's not unusual for us to go until after Thanksgiving for our first freeze, perhaps they will get a chance to bloom before it freezes. My flowers and even banana trees are going strong, along with my basil plant which is loving the cooler weather (80s/50s today)!
