Simplicity And Autumn Colours

It was a glorious autumn day in Ontario and would have been a sin to waste the warmth and sunshine by staying indoors.

The muted shades of grasses going to seed and bare earth in the denuded gardens, contrasting with the brilliant colours of  autumn leaves, inspired me to bring a touch of that feeling indoors.

Clippers in hand, I wandered the yard and cut snippets of what could really be considered weeds. ~

A tall vase and some sand is the base for a simple arrangement of grass plumes, a weathered stick and a strand of Virginia creeper.  A little bird perches on the vine.

I thought this height was perfect against the old, chippy door in the family room. ~

Unfortunately, the whole thing was a bit too tippy with two crazy kittens hurling themselves at the vine and had to migrate to the sideboard. ~

I promise to get back to all the indoor painting I'm supposed to be doing, unless the sun shines again tomorrow!

  2. That's really pretty, is it actually a weed? I have Calia lilies growing here and they're weeds but by golly I love them, I only found out when I tried to get a different colour.

  3. So very pretty Maureen! Sometimes, simplicity is best...too bad about the kitties...they're obviously not at one with their surroundings yet...lol! xo wendy

  4. This is what I really love in decorating, the ability to take the simplest elements of nature and show them off. What a beautiful arrangement and it looks fabulous in both settings. I think we can get so caught up on this need to hit all the little stores looking for faux this and that when we have real this and that right outdoors. And nothing does it better!

  5. I agree with anangloinquebec - time to stop and actually smell the roses as they say. Beautiful display Maureen.

  6. Super pretty. I have the same issue with arrangements,...they have to be up and out of the way of all of the furry bodies in the house. Some want to play, some are bouncy clumsy beings, lol.

  8. One shouldn't waste the sunshine, especially when living in climates like ours ! Yesterday it was like a warm summers day and I was fine in a t-shirt. Today it was really windy and wet and cold !
The Virginia creeper is such a gorgeous colour, it makes for a perfect autumn display.

  9. Love it Maureen! Your simple arrangement is beautiful! I have virginia creeper and never once thought of bringing indoors. Our entire silo is covered in it and looks like it's on fire when it changes color.

  10. Maureen ... Love that display with the colorful leaves. Nice arrangement. I don't have the red leaf vine, but I do have some grass plumes, but they are fuzzy and shed all over the place, so not good in the house. Maybe I could spray them.

  11. I was outside today, too. Washing windows. Does that sound like I was enjoying the Fall day? Well, I do love the enjoyment of looking through clean glass-xo Diana

  13. This arrangement is gorgeous and thank goodness I popped over hear because I've been spending the last half hour trying to Google "vine that has berries that looks like small grapes" and all I could come up with was "wild grapes" It's Virginia Creeper!! Thank you! so funny that you had it on your post! I was looking because I took some pictures of them to this morning since the leaves are such a pretty color right now.

    1. I just Googled Virginia Creeper and just found out "These berries contain oxalic acid, which is moderately toxic to humans" Oops I guess I should be glad to be here unscathed because I tasted one trying to figure out if it was a grape.

Love that you found it right at your footsteps, you just had to take them to get there! Yes, let's get out and enjoy that brilliant autumn sun which shines on treasures at our feet!
