Faux Blue And White Enamelware

Now, does this look like the real thing to you? ~

It's not!  I broke my ceramic compost bucket, which was a great relief to me.  It looked good but was heavy and hard to clean.  That meant I could go back to the convenient metal one with a removable liner that washed up like a dream.  The problem with the metal one was that is was really, really ugly.

I forgot to take a before picture so here it is upside down and already spray painted white on the far side. ~

It's a Homesense item that I think I bought for $7.  I taped off the wooden handles and spray painted it with white enamel.  It was a definite improvement over the orange but boring.  I was rummaging around the craft room and found a can of dark blue enamel spray paint.  Inspiration stuck!

I taped a plastic bag over everything but the rolled rim at the top and gave the rim a couple of coats of the dark blue.

A little distressing on the handles (done with a metal pot scraper because that was easier than hunting around for sandpaper) and it looks pretty authentic. ~

There is a hook on the side of this bucket for a scoop so I guess it was intended to be a flour canister. I decided to hang a rustic tag from it instead.

Some simple materials and a stamp set and I'm good to go. ~

I've never stamped before and sure need to work on my technique! ~

Okay crafters, how do you stop the ink from getting on the edges of the stamp?  HELP!

Now, I'm eyeballing every piece of metal I come across to see if I can turn it into enamelware!

  1. Ink on the edges - part of the charm. Great refresh.

  2. It's perfect for a country kitchen, I love it. The stamp thing if you rub the ink pad over the stamp gently rather than press the stamp into the ink will help avoid the side bits. I love enamel pots I have one but it's is ridiculously heavy I rarely use it what a great alternative.

  5. I think the ink on the edges adds charm to this piece which looks fabulous, but I'm glad to read the tip above on how to prevent that if you don't want the look on something more precise.

  6. I like the ink on the edges too, but Mel has the best solution I know of. I think your pot looks just like enamel ware! Nice job girl! Are you going to drill holes in the top?

  7. Awesome project! You can cut down the rubber on stamps to just around the edge of the pattern / image to avoid those black lines... I used to separate whole sheets of multiple stamps into individual squares until a friend showed me to cut as close as possible to the image and it works great!

I was about to type my stamping tip but Mel has written it perfectly already, however I don't mind the ink edges either, adds to the homemade charm.

  19. Perfect! That reminds me, i need a compost bucket - with a lid for sure... because my crazy terrier eats the compost. Once she got into some coffee grounds. A hyper terrier who has ingested coffee grounds is not fun!

  20. Gorgeous, Maureen! From the first photo, and before I continued reading, I truly thought you had purchased new enamelware! Love the dark blue rim against the cool white and the warm, wooden handles. Very Scandi-savvy, I might add! Kudos!

  27. Wow! It's hard to believe that the orange bucket metamorphed into such a beautiful object!
Thanks for sharing that technique with us. Did the white paint say "enamel" on the can? I am just wondering if it was a special kind of spray paint.
