Cat Security 101

I'm not talking about you keeping your cats secure.  I'm talking about my cat inventing a security system for her stuff!

Deb from Just Cats Home Care explained why cats often leave their toys by the door.  I'm not going to tell you why.  You have to click on the name of her site and find out for yourself.  If you are a cat owner, you really need to follow Deb because she is a professional cat sitter and shares tons of information to keep your buddies happy and healthy.

My Maeve has an entirely different reason for keeping her stash by the front door. ~

One day, when my brother and his wife were visiting, I see Maeve making trips to the front door with toys in her mouth.  They, of course, don't see a thing going on.  Eventually, curiosity was killing me and I had to go see what she was doing.

She'd made a little pile of toys under the door stopper that my daughters always called the boingy thing. ~

I'm pondering this and pretending to pay attention to the conversation, as any good hostess should.  Just as they are exiting the door, it strikes me.  It's a boingy thing!  I halt my guests at the door and make that thing boing.  Like a shot, Maeve tears down the stairs and heads straight for those toys!  She has invented a toy alarm!

Who's been touching my pipe cleaner, fuzzy ball and fake mice! ~

Now I have to get everything back in the safe! ~

It's a regular thing now and I can show you if you pop over here.  I have lots of witnesses to Maeve's ingenuity.  It works especially well if you look very untrustworthy.  Why, just last weekend my friend Liz had the look of a diabolical cat toy thief.  Maeve took no chances and I can produce Liz for a witness along with at least two of my siblings, my neighbour and anyone under the age of thirteen who enters the house. Potential thieves all!

Don't tell me there's nothing going on in this girl's head! ~

Yeah, I know her head is dusty.  She flips on her back and pulls herself under the china cabinet with her paws.  The space is too small for the big cats to get in and it's fun to stick a paw out and swipe at the thieving guests when they walk by.  It's also like having a Robo Vac.  I find it much easier to dust off the cat's head than clean under the china cabinet!

I wonder what else is going on in that head?

  2. Good Morning Maureen, Well I have to say Maeve is an incredible cat, to have invented a toy alarm. I loved reading about her and I laughed at the end when you said she was your Robo Vac....she is very kind dusting your floor for you! Do you remember the old Guinness advert, "Guinness reaches the parts which other beers cannot reach" well in Maeve's case it should read, "Maeve reaches the parts which other cats cannot reach!"
    Have a lovely weekend.
    Best Wishes

  3. Maureen that is one smart cat! Sam is allergic to cats, otherwise I would have several....maybe more! How fun/distracting it must have been to watch her do that! I was curious..does she have other toys that are not mice? Was she just worried about the mice? When we lived in Montana, one night our old dog Lucky, dragged her thin old bed out to the middle of the room. Sam and I watched her quietly and didn't say a word. We had never seen her do this before. She looked right at us and grabbed one end in her mouth, folded the bed in half and laid down on the doubled over bed!! The next day we went out and got her a brand new THICK fluffy bed. Tell me that dog wasn't smart. Pets are just amazing sometimes. I'm showing your story to Sam when he wakes up!

  8. I think Maeve is a truly smart creature. I am glad to be trusted enough to be ALLOWED to throw her toys for her - non stop - when visiting; but of course not the ones under boingy.

    1. Of course Maeve lets you throw toys for her. You let her help you run the sewing machine! She loves a fair trade.

  16. Maureen ... that is a very cute and smart cat and so helpful too that she dusts your floors for you. This story is very entertaining as I am sure your cat is too.

Hope you are having better weather.

  18. Oh, I love this post. My Holly is not a hoarder or protector. She leaves her toys everywhere and our house always looks like PetSmart just exploded! Holly has nice long fur and is also a good cleaning tool. I've thought of holding her by her tail, spraying her with pledge and then pushing her under the furniture to get all those hard to reach places! I love your blog and will start following it. We seem to have lots in common! I'm glad you liked my "Mayberry" post!!!

  21. Hi Maureen,

Your commentary on Maeve and her fabulous feline radar is TOO funny!! Since moving to the countryside, my husband, who is a huge animal lover, has adopted a family of three cats. Although I'm not particularly a pet person, maybe because I'm allergic to dander and a host of other things, I have to say, these cats and their curious ways are very entertaining, and keep me company (at the windowsill) throughout the day!

  22. Maureen,
Our cat hides all her toys but a couple and she only plays with them in the hallway.
You have such a cute cat. Just wanted to stop and say hi! and to say I have went totally google+ now.

  23. I couldnt believe Maeve did this but after testing her once or twice or maybe three times because I couldnt believe it, I was in awe. Maeve is one smart cat, she is cute too, she came running around the corner and watched her toys like a hawk until I left.

  25. That is sooo funny Maureen! What a smartie Maeve is!!! As a fellow cat owner/lover I know that there's always a reason why our cats do things, but we don't always know what those reasons are. They are extremely ingenious!

  26. Maeve is a very smart kitty. Much smarter than my two who hide their toys in the dogs' beds. The toys are then promptly ripped apart. Unless there is some kind of toy extortion going on that I don't know about.

I use cat duster and dog duster whenever possible. They do need to work for their food!
