I spent some fun time with my chickens yesterday. They enjoy attention and, of course, any berry treats I hand out! I've been planning on making a sign for Chicken Ville and trying to find a cute chickeny kind of name for their new home.
They looked so relaxed and happy, as they pecked around their yard, that I got to wondering if they had some kind of genetic sense that made them long for the fresh air and sun they had never seen in the mass production farm. ~

Sorry to show you something so gross, but that was their reality before they came to me.
Then, it struck me! Bramasole! I stole the name of the villa in Under A Tuscan Sun (one of my all time favourite movies). Bramasole means "To Yearn For The Sun".
I grabbed a piece of antique baseboard that I'd salvaged from the dumpster at my rental reno and started painting. I'm no artist, but I wanted to splash on some greens, blues and yellows for a sunny day vibe. ~
I printed out the letters and traced them onto the board with carbon paper. Using that outline, I started hand painting. The rough surface did make it a little hard to get straight lines but that just makes it look handmade. At least, that's what I told myself and my chicken friends nodded agreement!
Do you like your sign, Gert? ~
How would I know? I'm blind! Now where are the stinking blueberries you promised me for posing! |
Gertrude and Maude will never again be #'s 107 and 172! These are the pierced tags Farm Girl cut out of their wings. ~
They will never again yearn for the sun, because now they live in Bramasole! ~
Have a day filled with sunshine and dreams come true!

Oh Maureen, God Bless You for not only caring, but for the work and expense you have extended to provide what nature intended for these lovely creatures. I am really having a difficult time buying eggs anymore, but I am trying to get "Free Range" even though they cost more. I know though, that commercial chickens, even the ones who have what they call "free range", probably never see the sun and still suffer under cruel conditions. Greed always causes pain...to someone or something.
ReplyDeleteGertrude and Maude are lucky hens!
ReplyDeleteGood job on the sign. Better check that dumpster for more treasures before it gets hauled away.
Everything's looking great!
I abhore animal cruelty. I'm afraid when I eat eggs I am absorbing the stress those poor chickens must experience. I'm so glad you gave these chics a heavenly place to live out their lives. Bramasole is surely a beautiful place for them to roost and I LOVE your sign.
ReplyDeleteWhat a heart you have Maureen - and I just love their new home
ReplyDeleteXOXO
you most assuredly did give the chicks a heavenly place to live out their lives...
ReplyDeleteYour sign and the sentiment are great. The whole farm looks great!
ReplyDeleteAhhh so nice! I love that movie too, watch it over and over! They are certainly some lucky girls!
ReplyDeletethe chickens are so lucky to have "found" you, maureen:) the sign is awesome- i love the colors!
ReplyDeleteLovely job on your sign! We have sweet chickens, too. They become part of the family.
ReplyDeleteHave you read her books about Bramsole? I love them and they are different than the movie and contain her recipes. Your chickens live in comfort and style.
ReplyDeleteLove the sign and love the movie, great job, your hens are so lucky
ReplyDeleteThis post almost makes me feel like crying when I think of what those poor birds suffered at man's hands. I love your new sign and I love that you are the kind of person that rescues and loves even a humble chicken back to health. You are a good soul!!! xo Diana
ReplyDeleteOh I'm so happy you saved them. People can be so cruel. Chickens are sweet kind creatures and to mistreat them is a crime.
ReplyDeleteOh and I just wanted to say....I HAD to join this blog after reading about you rescuing these sweet chicks.
ReplyDeleteI love your "chicken blogs"!! Apparently I love your "chicken blog crafts" too!! That is a sweet sign and well worth divin for! I keep tellin Sam that I want Guineas....he keeps sayin "no"!!
ReplyDeleteIf you pronounced it Guinness, he'd probably say yes and then you could surprise him with Guineas instead of beer!
DeleteOh, how wonderful! When I see a photo like the one of the chickens in that cage, it makes me heartsick. Good for you for rescuing them and giving them such a wonderful home, complete with a beautiful sign!

Hi Maureen, I totally love the whole thing, the fact you really care and love your chickens ,the lovely sign and their home is adorable. Every chicken wishes they could live at your house. Soon your chickens will show you how much they appreciate you buy gifting you with a bounty of fresh eggs. How good is that!
ReplyDeleteYou should be sooo proud! Your chicken friends are very happy in their new home and have improved noticably compared to when you brought them home. Your last photo there looks so quaint and lovely like the beautiful chicken coop it is! xo wendy
ReplyDeleteI just love the fact that you have these chickens in your back yard!!! I soooo want a chicken coop and you may have inspired me....need to work that into my backyard design.
ReplyDeleteYou know....I always get a little choked up when I see a tractor trailer truck going down the road loaded with caged chickens 'cause I know what their destination is. I have four girls and just adore them. Their home is decorated with window boxes, a real mailbox and yep a sign I had made on Etsy that says: Laid in Virginia. My poor little "Snow" is molting right now and looks pitiful. I am using her dropped white feathers to make angel wings. What are your girls favorite treats? Mine love noodles and rice. :)
ReplyDeleteP.S. I forgot to say bless you for rescuing your chicks. What a palace they live in! And I know they love the sunshine. Mine get to free range in the afternoons and I usually let them out around 2 pm each day. They are at the door pacing back and forth ready to go every day about that time.
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh they looked so sad in that first photo. You have really brought them back to health. Okay how cute is your set up. I love the coop and the sign. I want to make one for mine too and am thinking of putting the "city chicks" on it. Thanks for linking up my friend.
ReplyDeleteLove the story of your chickens and how you gave them happiness again! One of my favorite movies is also Under the Tuscan Sun, and love the name and now used it of your chickens Haven. They sure are looking so happy and healthy.
ReplyDeleteWHat a lovely home they have with you now! I need to rescue some battery hens to add to our flock. Your sign is great too. :)
ReplyDeleteMaureen,
ReplyDeleteYou are such a fairy godmother to these adorable chickens! Bless you for your kindness and generosity. How perfect to name their little home "Bramasole",(LOVE that movie and need to see it over and over again every so often - great therapy). Kudos to you for your creativity and spirit!
Poppy:)
